The
Sewickley Heights History Center is committed to preserving the
natural beauty of Sewickley Heights and maintaining its historical
integrity. The area grew during the industrial revolution when
Pittsburgh's steel industry was in its infancy. At that time,
most industrialists and business leaders lived in a community called
Old Allegheny, which was a separate city across the river from
Pittsburgh. The homes there were quite nice, but the proximity
to the steel city and all of its pollution prompted residents to
spend their summers elsewhere; and so they chose Sewickley
Heights.
It was a fascinating time from 1900 through the 1920's because so many exquisite mansions were built. They were called "cottages," similar to those in Watch Hill, Newport, and Southampton, but many were working farms with fancy names, a myriad of servants, stonewalls, gatehouses, formal gardens as well as tennis courts and swimming pools. The area also became popular when the clubhouse for the Allegheny Country Club (formed in 1895) was relocated to Sewickley Heights, as many members were not satisfied with the club's location in Old Allegheny. Wonderful traditions took root at that time including the Horse Show, The Hunt, and the Riding and Driving Party. One can only imagine the wild social affairs of the time. Sewickley Heights has always been a special place to live, "magnificent enough to inspire you, yet peaceful enough to relax you." We celebrate our history, so please enjoy our Center.
And much more!
